Dragon Boat Experiences for Youth and Community Groups
Overview
Nothin’ Dragon envisions a community where all individuals have equal access to opportunities for growth, challenge, and personal development. We are proud to provide our Dragon Boat Experience between April and October at Rocky Point Park, Port Moody. We believe this program can have a transformative impact on the lives of its participants.
In addition to the physical activity, paddlers will learn about and experience the beautiful area, which has a rich history, from the First Nations of the Coast Salish Peoples to the era of the lumber industry, and Port Moody’s place in Canadian railway history. Burrard Inlet has been home to the Indigenous peoples of the Musqueam, Sḵwxwú7mesh and Tsleil-waututh, who have resided in this territory for thousands of years. Paddlers often spot seals, eagles and other sea and bird life.
About Dragon Boating
Dragon boat racing is one of the fastest-growing water sports in the world. Participants of all ages compete and enjoy the sport. Dragon boats are 12 meters in length and are propelled by 20 paddlers, guided by a steersperson and kept in rhythm by a drummer seated at the bow of the boat, maintaining a steady, and powerful pace for the duration of the traditional 500-meter course.
Program Objectives
The Dragon Boat Experience aims to empower young individuals and groups through a unique and exhilarating team-based sport. By partnering with local schools and community organizations, we plan to offer free dragon boat training experiences to those who may not otherwise have the means or opportunities to take part in such a sport. Our objectives include:
- 1Building Confidence and Self-esteem: The program will inspire participants to develop confidence in their abilities, foster a sense of belonging, and build self-esteem through teamwork, leadership opportunities, and personal growth.
- 2Promoting Inclusivity: We believe in creating a safe and inclusive environment where individuals from all walks of life can come together, learn from each other, and celebrate diversity.
- 3Fostering Physical and Mental Well-being: Engaging in the physical sport of dragon boat racing will promote fitness, wellness, and overall well-being, contributing to healthier lifestyles for our participants.
- 4Encouraging Collaboration and Communication Skills: Participants will learn the importance of effective communication in the boat, teamwork, and collaborative problem-solving, skills that are valuable not only on the water but in all aspects of life.
Fees: Your Dragon Boat Experience fees paid to our Not for Profit Society will go directly towards covering the costs of equipment, insurance, fuel, transportation, and related expenses.

About Nothin’ Dragon
The Nothin’Dragon Paddling Society, a not-for-profit society, has Paddled with Purpose for more than 25 years in the waters of Burrard Inlet from our base at Port Moody’s beautiful Rocky Point Park.
Our team of experienced paddlers includes many retired teachers and school administrators. Nothin’ Dragon takes pride in community contributions to youth in the Tri-Cities. We teach youth about our sport and the teamwork required to make a dragon boat glide through the water, with everyone in unison, working as a team.
Nothin’ Dragon sponsors a dragon boat team from Riverside and Gleneagle Secondary Schools in Coquitlam. For many years we operated the Kateslem Kids, a ‘Youth at Risk Spring Program,’ we’ve supported the Girl Guides of Canada and a local non-profit society that houses and assists women overcoming addictions. We have also hosted students for classroom trips and international student exchange programs. Read about the range of our community activities on our website Community page.
